BB King, an amazingly talented man. He died today, leaving behind an incredible legacy. The music that he played required actual skill, unlike today's crappy noise that assaults my ears. Since learning to play guitar, I've been able to appreciate music for the talent it takes to create it. BB King had a gift that he used to show the world just what somebody could do on the guitar. His style incorporates some quick picking and incredible vibrato that obviously took years to master, which he recreated show after show. Kids today are skinny trolls that press a space-bar and dance around on stage like kids trying to get water out of their ears. If there were more people like BB King, music would be an entirely different concept. You wouldn't just listen to music, you would experience it.

5/14

Today we talked about Bread and Circuses, the entire point was to keep the public (somewhat) alive and entertained. I honestly think that the same thing is going on today. The government is providing food stamps, free health care, and unemployment checks to people to keep them alive. This is a good thing in theory, until people unavoidably cheat the system. This happened earlier today at my mom's job- the woman got hired, showed up to work, then left for a lunch break and never came back. We presume that this was in an attempt to keep the government thinking that she is looking for a job so she can keep collecting unemployment. Then the circuses, one fine point is the Obama Phones. They keep people thinking that Obama is working for them and making their lives better. Things like this are tools of the government to keep people happily sedated and numb to what is really going on.

Just my 2 cents, but let me tell you: America is heading to the same time as when Rome collapsed.

5/13

Today we had our first pop quiz. I found it extremely easy, probably because I am a really good test taker. I find that homework has always been the hardest part of school, and it always drives me insane when people say that hw points are the easiest to get. It is 100% false. I will take a test or quiz over homework 10 out of 10 times and score better every single time on the tests, which I proved today with a 100% even though I have been lagging on my blog.

5/12

Today we finished watching the movie on Rome and Tiberius. Tiberius was one of the few people dedicated to the good of all of Rome's citizens. He ended up dying in cold blood for his cause, and his brother soon followed in his footsteps. I think that Tiberius was power hungry and devoted to the people at the same time. He may have been looking for the acceptance from the public that he never got from his mother.

HW 3/24

Today in class we continued going over powerpoints. some of the stuff people found is pretty cool, but I already knew most of it. Ancient Greece has always been a favorite topic of mine. I'm anxious for my group to share. We are presenting on the topic of Greek gods and goddesses. I think we all did a pretty equal amount of work. I may have made one slide less because I was focusing on information and how to present it rather than puking random facts all over the presentation (V-RON. I KNOW YOU CHANGED MY STUFF CUZ YOU "DIDN'T LIKE IT" but I digress).

Today in class, we continued to work on our powerpoints. Veronica, Megan, and I finished early. Our topic was Greek gods. I have always found Greek mythology interesting so this was a welcomed topic for me.

Friday Cyber day blog

Plato Silanion Musei Capitolini MC1377.jpg

Nobody knows exactly when and where Plato was born. We do know that he came from an Aristocratic family, meaning very rich and influential. Most scholars think that he was born in Athens around 420BC. Growing up, he was taught grammar, music, and gymnastics and it is said that he wrestled at the Isthmian Games. Plato traveled to Italy, Sicily, Egypt, and Cyrene. He returned to Athens at the age of 40. Plato founded the earliest known school called The Academy. It was destroyed in 84BC by Lucius Cornelius Sulla. Pretty embarrassing to have your school destroyed by somebody named Lucius.... Plato is thought to have died in his sleep. Plato often discussed Father-Son relationships. He also believed that knowledge is a matter of recollection, and not learning, observation. or study; even though he complained about his forgetfulness. Plato was also the first person to start a conspiracy theory that we all live in the Matrix. "The theory of Forms (or theory of Ideas) typically refers to the belief that the material world as it seems to us is not the real world, but only an "image" or "copy" of the real world."

ANOTHER cyber day assignment

A Delphi detail.JPG

The temple of Apollo was a lot like the temple of Hera, except made of stone. It had 15 columns on EACH SIDE and was constructed out of limestone. The temple shown in the picture is in Delphi, Greece on the side of Mount Parnassus. Not much of the temple is still in tact today.

Temple of Hephaestos

The temple of Hephestus is in Athens, Greece. It is also known as the Theseion. It is in very good condition, and even has some of the original colorful painting on the inside and has a lot of marble in some places.

The Parthenon

The Parthenon is, in my opinion, one of the greatest ancient buildings ever built. It is, without doubt, the most iconic Greek building. Inside is a HUGE statue of Athena, goddess of wisdom. It is located in Athens, Greece. It measures 101ft x 288ft. The Parthenon was finished in 432 BC

Egyptians were the first, after the Sumerians, to separate time into something like hours. Egyptians build Obelisks; tall, four sided structures that tapered off toward the top around 3500 BC. They followed the shadow like a sundial.

Egyptians also made what may be the first ever portable timepiece. This came around 1500 BC to measure hours. It was divided between 10 day time hours and 2 twilight hours in the morning and night.

The merkhet is the oldest known tool used for astronomy. It came around 600 BC. It was used to determine North and South by lining them up with the Pole Star.

Sundials eventually became more elaborate, like the hemispherical dial. It was a bowl-shaped depression cut into a block of stone, carrying a central vertical pointer and scribed with sets of hour lines for different seasons.

Water clocks date back to 1500 BC. They were stone with sloping sides to allow water to pour out continuously. Markings on the sides showed how much time had passed as water got to each mark.

2-5 HW

Today was my first day back in class. Not exactly a welcome party but hey, everyone makes mistakes. Today we did research on our given topic on why civilization succeeded in some places and failed in others. I am extremely unfocused right now.... anyways: I did my portion while most of the dudes (other than Jerry) screwed around (sorry guys, call it how i see it). I think tomorrow's class should be interesting to say the least.

HW 2-2

Hi Mr. Schick.
I am sick :'( I went to the doctor's today and I have some kind of virus. No strep, which surprised me. I will not be in tomorrow either. My throat is hurtin' somethin' fierce and my sinuses are backed up like a tunnel during rush-hour. In other news....
My dog is growing immensely. She has gained about 20+ pounds in a couple weeks.

Muslims are trying to force shelters accepting food-stamps to adhere to Sharia Law. I find that pretty messed up. I understand how they have the right to practice their religion, but it's getting quite ridiculous. Here's the link:

http://viral.buzz/video-muslims-using-food-stamps-demand-food-meets-islamic-requirements/

I know that "tolerance" is a big deal to JC but they're pushing for education programs for muslim teens in gangs that keep getting  in trouble. If Christians kept getting in trouble for enforcing their beliefs it would be a huge deal. Muslim taxi drivers refuse to transport blind people with seeing-eye-dogs because they are considered dirty. Also the will not transport anybody with alcohol. all of this is in the article I'm sending. I know you may be all for something like this, but I'm curious as to what you'll have to say about it.

See ya Wednesday (Hopefully)

Homework 1/20/15

First western civilization class complete! Today's class was mostly people setting up blogs, or, in my case, trying to. I think this will be a fun semester, though much quieter. Yes, unfortunately, Cody has left us.

*moment of silence for our lost comrade*

Thank you, your support helps. Center right desk will always be Cody's. Thus it has been retired in his honor. Teacher, philosopher, and friend; these are his titles. Along with TacoBellBurrito.

I'm looking forward to the next semester of Western Civ. Dirty Schick and The Boys stand tall once again.
